University of Texas System and Coursera Expand Micro-credential Program Partnership to Include UT’s Health Institutions

By Jeff Maggioncalda, Coursera CEO

Career paths are evolving, even for advanced healthcare professionals. In today’s competitive and fast-changing job market, those with specialized knowledge, high-demand professional skills, and a willingness to learn will stand out.

Today, we’re excited to announce the expansion of our partnership with the University of Texas System (UT System) to offer nearly 15,000 students enrolled at UT Health Houston, UT Health San Antonio, UT MD Anderson Cancer Center, UT Medical Branch, and UT Southwestern Medical Center access to our high-demand Professional Certificates, free of cost.

In the U.S., Texas is ranked second for employment of healthcare professionals. With Coursera’s Career Academy, UT students can prepare for careers shaping the future of biotechnology and biosciences in public and private sectors, with training from the world’s top companies including Google, IBM, and Microsoft. As healthcare becomes more digital, many data and business credentials can enhance qualifications for healthcare positions, while software and IT skills will be required to manage patient portals, telehealth platforms, mobile apps, and AI integration into various administrative, diagnostic, and treatment processes.

The UT-Coursera “Texas Credentials for the Future” program remains the most extensive industry-recognized micro-credential program in the country. More than 255,000 students across UT’s nine academic institutions now have free access to over 45 Professional Certificates, equipping them with job-ready skills in a variety of fields without prior work experience. To date, students have spent more than 111,000 learning online and completing more than 18,300 courses.

In a recent Coursera global survey, 94% of university leaders said they believe micro-credentials can strengthen students’ long-term career outcomes. The report also found higher rates of satisfaction and engagement with students enrolled in these programs.

We’re excited to expand our partnership with the UT System to provide industry microcredentials to all students from all UT institutions, enriching the broad-based curriculum and preparing graduates to become future leaders in various industries.

Rollout schedules for students, faculty, staff, and alumni will vary by institution. For more information about Texas Credentials for the Future, visit utsystem.edu/sites/texas-microcredentials
